Color of the Year: Living Coral No. 16-1546

PANTONE is bringing color to 2019 in such a fun and refreshing way with their choice of color this year! If you haven’t heard, they recently announced that the 2019 color of the year would be PANTONE’s Living Coral! Shade No. 16-1546 to be exact.

The color is absolutely gorgeous! 16-1546 was picked with an awareness of today’s way of life and with an intention to make a statement. PANTONE said this of the color, “Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.”

To be honest, I don’t get the social media reference, other than I expect to see this color everywhere come Spring and Summer. Its vibrancy makes any piece come alive, whether it’s a nail polish or a sandal, that piece is going to POP! The challenge with Living Coral is figuring out how to incorporate the unique color into your everyday life.

So just how do you do you make Living Coral come alive within your own style this year? You sprinkle that shit everywhere! But let’s break it down and start with the face.

Understanding your skin’s undertones will help you find the best shade of Coral for you! Your skin’s undertone is the foundation to your style choices – from makeup to hair, to even earrings. There are 3 different types of skin undertones; Cool, Warm and Neutral. Knowing your skin’s undertone will help you find the ideal color to sport.

Cool undertones will want to look for pieces with a blue base, while Warm tones will want something with red-orange tones in the base. For those lucky enough to fall under the Neutral category, you have the best of both worlds and can work with basically any base color. Given the base of traditional coral colors – which has been described as, “an energetic combination of orange and pink with a golden undertone” it only seems natural that those with warm and neutral undertones will have an easier time finding flattering Coral pieces.

Moving from skin to makeup and accessories there are some things to consider. Proceed with caution when adding 16-1546, even if you’ve found the perfect tone for your skin. Too much of the color can be disrespectful to the eyes given its brightness. When I said sprinkle that shit everywhere, I truly meant to just sprinkle it. Don’t overdo it.

Using the color sparingly does not mean it can’t be the star of your outfit! Accessorizing and makeup is where you can have the most fun with color. It’s these little details, the special touches of color that transform your look. Just imagine a flattering black midi dress, with a pair of fabulous heels, salon fresh hair and all the booming Coral pieces that truly standout! Like a beautiful beaded Coral statement necklace with gold edges, freshly painted nails that are the perfect shade of Coral, and a stunning, rich satin Coral lipstick. You can’t go wrong with that!

If you’re playing it safe, try applying the color to just one area. Start with a light coral gloss or blush and work your way up the more comfortable you get with the color. For a more adventurous makeup look, try a blown out Coral eye with a matching blush- I’d recommend using the same powder, eye or blush, to keep things monochromatic. Top it all off with a Coral lip stain or gloss since a lipstick may be too opaque and you are owning the color of the year!

Honestly, there are so many ways to add Coral to your look – scarfs, hair color, pom-poms, nail polish, earrings, skirts, bags and so much more! Just remember to look for colors that compliment your skin’s undertone, keep your clothes simple to avoid colors or patterns having to compete with each other and above all – have fun with it!

Don’t be afraid to try color beyond your fashion. Try incorporating it into your surroundings like at work or at home. A super simple and fresh way to do this is by bringing in some fresh-cut Coral inspired flowers, which works both for the office and the home. Some other easy ways to add 16-1546 is through fabrics. For example, add a dazzling throw blanket across your bed or change out your accent pillow covers with a refresh Coral print instead. If you’re feeling bold use larger pieces of furniture or even an entire wall to bring in the color of the year!

From one fashionista to another, this is going to be a colorful year! Unlike colors from the past two years, Ultra Violet (2018) and Greenery (2017), this one is bound to make you think outside the box. I can’t wait to see what looks we’ll get down the catwalk come fashion week! And I especially can’t wait to see this in everyday street fashion. Bring on No. 16-1546!
