Emerging from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and now igniting the US electronic scene, Gioh Cecato commands the realm of Hard Techno as both a DJ and a producer. With a musical lineage rooted in piano and familial influence, she embarked on her sonic expedition a decade ago upon relocating to the States.

Beyond her prowess as an artist, Gioh serves as the visionary force behind Rave Culture Records, a dynamic sub-label of Techno Brooklyn, poised for impactful releases in 2024. Amidst crafting tracks for acclaimed labels like Mad Made, Hydraulix, and Autektone, Gioh curates monthly podcasts, spotlighting guest DJs and fueling the relentless techno spirit.

Receiving acclaim from influential DJs such as 9×9, Shlomo, Stan Christ, and Kozlov, Gioh’s tracks have echoed across stages in South and North America. Sharing spotlights with luminaries like Kobosil, Sara Landry, Cera Khin, Indira Paganotto, and Trym, she shapes a formidable presence in the hard techno scene. We had the honor to do an interview with her below:

Classic Entourage Mag: Gioh, your musical journey began in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and later led you to the USA. How has this cross-cultural experience influenced your approach to techno and shaped your unique sound?

Gioh Cecato: My musical journey from Brazil to the USA has been a transformative cross-cultural experience that significantly influenced my approach to techno and shaped my unique sound. In Brazil I immersed myself in the vibrant techno scene since an early age, attending raves and drawing inspiration from the diverse musical influences around me. Moving to the USA introduced me to a new dimension of techno characterized by innovation and experimentation. The merging of my Brazilian roots with the dynamic techno scene in the USA has given rise to a seamless blend in my musical approach.

When selecting a label to release my tracks, I prioritize a few key elements, I seek labels that align with my artistic vision, offering a platform where my music can thrive and evolve.

CE MAG: As the owner of Rave Culture Records, you’re not only a DJ and producer but also deeply involved in the business side of the industry. How do you balance the creative process of making music with the responsibilities of running a record label?


Gioh Cecato: Balancing music creation with running Rave Culture Records involves strategic time management. I dedicate specific periods to music production, ensuring an immersive focus on creativity. Simultaneously, I allocate time for the label’s business side, handling tasks with a strategic mindset. This dynamic balance allows both the creative and operational aspects to thrive.

CE Mag: Your monthly podcasts feature guest DJs. Can you share with us how curating these podcasts enhances your connection with the techno community, and how it reflects your vision for Rave Culture Records?


Gioh Cecato: Curating monthly podcasts featuring guest DJs is a vital aspect of enhancing my connection with the techno community. It’s not just about sharing music but creating a space for diverse voices within the genre. These podcasts serve as a platform to spotlight emerging and established artists, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration. In essence, these curated podcasts embody the vision of Rave Culture Records, representing a collective celebration of techno in all its facets.

CE Mag: Having performed across both South and North America, can you highlight some memorable moments or experiences that have left a lasting impact on your journey as a techno artist?

Gioh Cecato: Performing across both South and North America has been a rollercoaster of unforgettable moments that have shaped my journey as a techno artist. Some standout memories were sharing the stage with distinguished artists like Kobosil, Rebekah, SNTS, Sara Landry and others.


Also performing in Brazil holds a special place in my heart, especially the incredible experience of being part of the Universo Paralello festival, which is not just any festival – it’s the number one festival in Brazil. Playing there for the second consecutive year was beyond amazing. Another highlight was feeling the pulse of diverse audiences, from the energetic vibes of South American crowds to the eclectic atmospheres in North America. Each gig brought a unique energy and cultural flavor.

CE Mag: You’ve collaborated with renowned labels such as Mad Made, Hydraulix, and Autektone. How do these collaborations contribute to your growth as an artist, and what do you look for in a label when choosing where to release your tracks?


Gioh Cecato: Collaborating with labels like Mad Made, Autektone and especially the EP with Dave the Drummer on Hydraulix, has significantly fueled my artistic growth. My album with Dave the Drummer opened up some awesome doors: After the EP, I joined forces with a label in Colombia, and bam, next thing I knew, I was touring there. It’s crazy how the right vibes and releases can create these amazing opportunities.

CE Mag: Your tracks have received support from top DJs globally. How does this recognition affect your creative process, and do you find it inspiring or does it add an extra layer of pressure?


Gioh Cecato: Receiving support from top DJs globally is incredibly inspiring and humbling. It adds a dynamic layer to my creative process, serving as both validation and motivation. Knowing that respected artists appreciate and endorse my work fuels a sense of confidence and encouragement to continue making music. Rather than feeling pressured, this recognition serves as a catalyst for exploration/ innovation and it encourages me to stay true to my artistic vision.

CE Mag: Techno is known for its immersive and pulsating nature. How do you approach crafting a set that not only engages the audience but also communicates your artistic vision effectively?


Gioh Cecato: Crafting a techno set is an art that goes beyond just playing tracks; it’s about creating an immersive journey. I approach it by carefully selecting tracks that resonate with the vibe I want to convey – it’s not just about playing any tracks, it’s about building an atmosphere, adapting in real-time to the crowd’s energy…Each set becomes a journey, a conversation between me, the music, and the crowd.

CE Mag: With plans for significant releases in 2024, can you give us a glimpse into what we can expect from Gioh Cecato and Rave Culture Records in terms of musical exploration and innovation?


Gioh Cecato: Absolutely! In 2024, you can expect Rave Culture Records (and myself) to embark on an exciting journey of musical exploration and innovation. I am delving deep into exploring new territories. The upcoming releases will be a fusion of raw energy, intricate soundscapes, and experimental tracks reflecting a commitment to evolving the techno genre. Stay tuned for a mix of solo releases and collaborations that will showcase a diverse range of influences!

CE Mag: Your passion for hard techno is evident in your work. How do you see the evolution of techno as a genre, and what role do you envision playing in shaping its future?


Gioh Cecato: The evolution of techno as a genre is a fascinating journey, constantly adapting and absorbing new influences. From my perspective, I see techno embracing diverse elements, merging with other genres, and pushing the boundaries of experimentation. It’s an exciting era where artists are fearlessly exploring unconventional sounds, and the genre is evolving into a more inclusive and dynamic space. In shaping its future, my vision is to contribute by staying true to the essence of hard techno while infusing it with fresh perspectives.

CE Mag: In the ever-changing landscape of electronic music, what advice do you have for aspiring DJs and producers looking to make their mark and find their unique voice in the techno scene?


Gioh Cecato: Find your unique voice by staying true to the music you’re passionate about. Don’t be afraid to explore different sounds and push boundaries, as innovation often comes from daring to be different. Build a solid foundation of technical skills, but also invest time in cultivating your own signature style. Collaborate with like-minded artists and absorb inspiration from various sources.
Lastly, remember that resilience is key. The journey in the techno scene can be challenging, but persistence, continuous learning, and a genuine love for the craft will set you apart.
